Located on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, the natural refuge that is located on the Samana peninsula is still the paradise and most isolated escape of the country, with wild and virgin beaches, coconut groves and rainforests. Here travelers will have countless activities where they can explore various natural beauties.

For an active holiday, practice canyoning, swimming through nine waterfalls until you reach Salto El Limón. Upon arrival you will find the majestic waterfall, where you can cool off in the natural freshwater pool and enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water. Or go to Las Terrenas to practice bodyboarding and kitesurfing. The best season to visit this peninsula is between January and April, as almost 2000 humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay to breastfeed and give birth to their young.

Santa Bárbara de Samaná combines the fun of the casino with endless lounges and bars along its picturesque boulevard facing the sea. After sunset, Avenida de la Marina acquires new energy, with a handful of trucks facing the sea with drinks, as well as informal bars and places to dance across the boulevard. The dance continues until late at night, with sounds of bachata and merengue.

Located in the heart of Las Terrenas, the Fishing Village was originally the main landing site for fishermen in the area. Over time, this coastline became an oceanfront entertainment center with its colorful row of trendy restaurants and bars.

Culture and history info

The rich and colorful history of Samana began as a Taino domain, centuries before the arrival of Columbus in 1493.
The maritime city of Samaná was founded in 1756 by Spanish families and in 1802 it was invaded by the French fleet of Napoleon Bonaparte with instructions that it be the capital of the colony, with the name of Napoleon City.

French settlers fleeing from Haiti joined the Spaniards in the development of sugarcane, coffee, cocoa and coconut plantations.
The formation of racial fusion migration continued in 1824 with the arrival of 300 slave families released from the United States, through agreements with the African Methodist Episcopal Church in America.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the United States participated in several negotiations to lease the peninsula.

Samaná has been an important part of the history of the Dominican Republic and has contributed to the development of tourism in the country as one of the leaders of the Caribbean region and the world.
